Is Botox a Wrinkle Fighter But Also a Depression Fighter?

Botox is one of the most popular anti-aging methods for fighting wrinkles. It is a drug developed from botulin and removes the wrinkles by paralyzing facial muscles. The $1.3 billion Botox treatment lasts approximately 100 days and millions of patients use it worldwide, who report seeing improvements within a week.
In addition to Botox being used for cosmetic purposes, doctors also use it in small doses to treat a variety of health problems, such as uncontrollable blinking, misaligned eyes, cervical dystonia (a neurological disorder) and severe underarm perspiration. There are very little side effects, which may include headaches, the flu, minor pain or an upset stomach.
Since Botox can be used for physical conditions, can it also be utilized for psychological and/or emotional health issues? According to researchers, patients who have been diagnosed with depression and have not responded to medications and treatments could one day be prescribed Botox treatments, especially after the results of a couple of study.
Last year, scientists published the findings of its study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, which highlighted that research participants who were given a single dose (five injections) of botulinum toxin in the region of the face between and just above the eyebrows noted a 47 percent decrease of depression symptoms after just six weeks.
"Our study of 74 patients who completed the trial showed a significant improvement in the Botox group and found that 27 percent of Botox patients went into remission, as compared to 7 percent of the placebo group," said Eric Finzi, MD, medical director of the Chevy Chase Cosmetic Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland and study co-author. "I propose it works by a process that I call emotional proprioception."
Why does it work? Since we frown, the muscles between our eyebrows send back negative emotional signals to our brain, which then concludes we are upset. Due to the fact that Botox injections make it very difficult to frown, "the lack of this negativity then creates a tremendously significant positive effect on our brain's assessment of our mental state."
Study authors do note that Botox treatments last about three to four months so depression patients would need repeated doses. Furthermore, any botox prescription would be administered for depression and not for cosmetic purposes.
At the present time, Botox utilized as a depression treatment method is undergoing clinical trials. This consists of many steps before it can be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is currently unknown when it would be approved by the federal department and if it would become the next Sarafem, Prozac or Cymbalta.
Health professionals do concur that more research is needed because there have only been a handful of studies to show a correlation between Botox and happiness - there have been at least two other studies to list the Botox-depression connection.
Whatever the case may be, there needs to be a respite in the U.S. soon. It is estimated that one in 10 Americans suffer from depression and it appears that antidepressants just mask the problem instead of finding the root causes.

Natural, Organic Beauty Products - Latest Trend in Global Economy

One of the latest trends in the United States and global economy is going green. Whether it's a grocery, health or clothing store, there are numerous businesses that are attempting to cash in on the movement of being environmentally-friendly. This shift in the marketplace can also be found in beauty products.
For decades, the average American woman has been applying various products on their skin and in their hair without understanding what's actually inside of those goods that try to make you look like the next Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen or Scarlett Johansson. In recent years, the industry has been exposed and has made female consumers think twice before putting on a dozen or so health and beauty products before leaving the house in the morning.
Since cosmetics are regulated differently from food and pharmaceuticals by the Food and Drug Administration, an array of ingredients and elements do not have to be approved. Essentially, it is up to the manufacturer of such a product to decide if the cosmetic is safe or unsafe.
In 2011, the Environmental Working Group published a list of cosmetics containing chemicals that are associated with hazardous health risks. The findings were based on information released by the federal government, the companies and scientific endeavors.
The list consists of foundations that contain an ingredient known as oxybenzone, a cause of irritation or allergic reaction; powders with retinyl paltimate that has been linked to cancers; blushes considered to be human carcinogens and might even be toxic to immune and respiratory systems over a long period of time; and nail polishes that have toluene, dibutyl phthalate, and formaldehyde and can be the reasons for impaired breathing and the causes of birth defects and cancers.
Due to consumer concerns and calls for these chemicals to be removed from beauty products, there has been a growing demand in natural and organic cosmetics. Indeed, beauty professionals say these are much better for you, your skin, your health and the environment.
Although it might be expensive to immediately transform a woman's beauty regimen, some experts say there should be a gradual shift towards natural products because, according to Trevor Steyn, founder of home-grown skincare hero, Esse, "there are new chemicals though, man-made chemicals, that we have no mechanisms to deal with and exposure to these can result in long-term health risks."
Cosmetic chemist Diane Eales told Women24.com that the best product to start off with is a natural cleanser because "it doesn't strip the skin of its natural oils and then as you finish your other products replace them with products with natural ingredients."
Organizations are warning consumers to be careful about brands that label their products as "organic." The Soil Association in partnership with three other global organic establishments have developed COSMOS, a group that is developing international organic standards for beauty and cosmetic products.
This entity explains that chemicals found in non-organic beauty products, such as phthalates, parabens and PEGs, can also be located in antifreeze and floor and oven cleaners. What the problem is is that these companies are naming these products as "natural," "organic" and "biological," even if their items only have one percent of organic elements.
To ensure the product you are using is actually organic, the Soil Association has published a list of companies on its website that have genuinely developed organic products. Products that are truly organic are clearly labelled for the customer.
It has been reported that all of the above also applies to hair care. Jessa Blades, a natural beauty artist, told The Daily Green that most hair products should contain natural oils, natural butters and essential oils. Consumers should avoid products that have parabens, silicone, petrolatum and similar ingredients.

Finding Good Solutions For Anti-Aging

Who wants to get old? Virtually no one. Yet aging is a fact of life. No one can keep living and escape it. Only those who leave this life prematurely through the unfortunate ravages of illness or accident can avoid the pitfalls of aging. People often say that growing old beats the alternative, but that may not be the case depending on the quality of life achieved.
An important part of the anti-aging process is to try and stay younger. Though the years will pass, good health should be maintained as much and as long as possible. Good health and wellness are available for most people, but it is certainly not a guarantee of life and longevity. The body and mind will wear out as senior citizens well know. However, keeping as healthy as possible is a good goal for anyone to have.
There are some methods which may be used as good solutions in the fight against old age. Some of these are:
1. Keep the body active and healthy by doing daily exercise
2. Keep the mind active and alert by reading, playing puzzles such as crosswords, being aware of current affairs, writing letters or emails to friends and family
3. Meditate
4. Do some type of volunteer service for friends or strangers
5. Find and use products which could be beneficial for anti-aging
Exercising is not an easy thing to do for most senior citizens. However, there are some forms of exercise which may be helpful while not taking a lot of effort. There are a number of exercises which are specifically geared for the older body which do not require a lot of strain and effort. Walking has long been known to be an excellent source of exercise which could be easy for most people because it generally does not require any special or expensive equipment. Getting out in the sun helps people get vitamin D to keep the bones stronger.
Keeping the mind active should be a fairly simple matter. Many senior citizens have more time on their hands than anything else. Reading and keeping up on current affairs can help the mind stay alert and active. Playing puzzles which require thinking could help. Even watching television can be helpful if it keeps the mind active. Staying in touch with family and friends through letters or emails can bring more happiness and well being into a person's life. Taking some time out for meditation has found to be beneficial. Doing volunteer service benefits the receiver and also the giver. Finding a home based business could help a person feel useful as well as possibly bring in some needed extra money.
Many types of vitamins and health supplements are on the market to aid in the anti-aging efforts. Finding products which help a person feel better may be a boon to becoming older. There are lots of solutions which can help in anti-aging. Finding them and putting them into practice and use could help people improve the quality of life as they age.

Myths And Facts About Botox

Botox is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures ever since it was first introduced more than ten years ago, but despite its global acceptance, it is also perhaps the most misunderstood one.
While it's easy to get seduced with the promises of turning back the years and getting back your younger face literally over night, many who are intrigued by this cosmetic procedure are still held back from taking the plunge with the myths surrounding Botox and its use.
Some fear that they will end up with a "face freeze", the notion that probably originated from seeing too many stars and starlets in the media, sporting a perpetual dear-in-the-headlights look. With their faces frozen in a perpetual surprise, it seems like they themselves can't believe how far they went with their Botox use and abuse.
The truth is that - when properly administered - Botox will preserve your normal facial expressions, only smoothing out the frown lines and wrinkles.
Botox was approved by the FDA specifically for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (called glabellar lines or "the 11" because they resemble that number), but is often used "off label" for other wrinkles. Botox is therefore used for smoothing out crow's feet (lines around the eye), forehead lines, skin bands on the neck, lines around the mouth ("smoker's lines"), for turning up "mouth frowns", for arching the flattened eyebrows - and the list goes on and on.
Those starlets with their strangely arched eyebrows may simply be the victims of using Botox injections in a way they were never intended to be used. Properly administered Botox injections will smooth out the forehead while preserving the natural arch of your eyebrows.
Using Botox is not supposed to make you look "fake" or "plastic". Of course, one should know when enough is enough: that's a lesson that obviously eluded all those expressionless starlets.
Many are afraid of using Botox because "it's a toxin". While Botox is indeed produced from the potentially lethal botulinum bacteria, the concentration of the toxin in Botox is so low, that - when properly administered by a certified professional - there's no way for a toxin to somehow spread outside of the tiny area where it is injected.
Since Botox is commonly administered via injections directly to the muscle, being afraid that the procedure will be painful is understandable. However, what you can expect to feel is more like a burning sensation or a slight irritation. While bruising on the skin may occur, it will typically clear in a few days.
The notion that "anyone" can administer Botox injection is a dangerous myth. Only a trained clinician can properly and safely administer Botox injections in a way that will leave you satisfied with your new appearance. Botox "mills", salons, mall shops, are not the places to get Botox. "Botox parties" are just a stupid and potentially harmful idea. You will probably leave from those places looking awkward, if not disfigured.
A qualified clinician will know what is the right dose of Botox to use to get the desired results, and which muscles to target precisely to achieve it. He will not leave you with a complete muscle paralysis that prevents any facial expression for a distressingly long period of time, unlike some needle-wielding amateur.
You may have heard the tales of women (and men) liking their new smooth foreheads so much, that they had become addicted to Botox. It's easy to dismiss that kind of stories, but this one may not be only a myth. You can become addicted to virtually anything that makes you feel good: if applying Botox makes you feel great because it works so well, but eventually it wears off - you can become psychologically addicted to the procedure to keep experiencing those feelings. A "real" physical addiction to Botox is not possible.
In the end, despite its proven efficacy, Botox is not a panacea for all wrinkles, furrows and creases. Botox works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses and thus relaxing the muscle contractions which eases out wrinkles. Because of its specific targeting of wrinkles caused by the overly tense muscles, there is no logic in using Botox to treat those wrinkles caused by the sun damage and gravity.

Long Lashes to Flaunt

Over the years dermatologists have been working to bring products into the market that enhances the face beauty naturally. Even make up demanded by females and males alike these days is such that looks natural and simple as well. The use of cakes and powders over the face used in the past to hide imperfections of the skin are no more in demand. Eyelashes, as endorsed by many dermatologists over the globe, are the key feature of the eyes that make the eyes prominent and enhance the beauty of the face.
Through extensive research and development, eyelash growth serums have been introduced in the market. Eyelash growth serums have the unique quality of stimulating the growth of the eyelashes, even on people that not well endowed with eyelashes naturally. The use of the eyelash growth serum over the weeks has shown amazing results. Most of the users of eyelash growth serums showed great excitement with the introduction of the product, saying that it was something that they desired for a long time.
Eyelash growth serums have taken the market by storm. When used with mascaras and eyeliner, the result is worthwhile. Since the lashes grow naturally the use of the mascara and eyeliner does not have to be extensive to the extent that they look unnatural. Eyes are the most prominent feature of the face of human being and if the art of makeup is understood, attention can be drawn towards the eyes sometimes to take attention of some other features of the face! Eyelash growth serums, together with mascaras and eyeliners are in high demand and the sales are seen to increase by many folds over the years.
Special care should also be taken to make sure that the skin looks perfect. With age the skin starts to lose its texture and color, therefore, it is important to know that anti-wrinkle creams are used to enhance the beauty of the face. Anti-wrinkle creams use components that help slow down the process of aging and darkness under eyes. Over the years, the use of anti-wrinkle creams has increased, especially with females. A major reason for the extensive use of anti-wrinkle cream is the easy availability of the product. Anti-wrinkle creams work by helping the dead skin on the face to shed and stimulate the growth of new skin cells on the face, making the user look up to ten years younger!

Younger Looking Skin Now With Ancient Anti-Aging Skincare Solution

With age, wisdom may come - but so do wrinkles!
Years will certainly take a toll on your skin, no matter how healthy you're trying to live. All of the nutritionists' advice and fitness gurus' following will not save you from losing your looks. Eventually, your young, radiant, dewy skin will live only on your old photographs.
Grim, isn't it? What a cruel joke: just when you are ready to start enjoying the fruits of your hard labor, your own skin will betray you. You may feel better than ever, more calm and secure in yourself and your place in the world, and - why not? - much wiser than before; however your face has definitely changed, but not for the better, unfortunately.
Luckily advancing age does not need to mean unequivocally putting up with wrinkles that are getting more and more deep and pronounced with every year passing by, complimented with sagging folds of skin on your face and body, spider veins, or telltale sun spots and blemishes.
There are many anti-age solutions for younger looking skin, ranging from prescription medication to elective surgery. And, of course, there is anti-age skin care as the most used, and universally favored, solution to return the youthful glow to your skin. With today's advances in skin care technology, skin care products are made to be no less effective than some more complicated, and maybe even invasive, anti-age treatments.
With a little help from anti-age skincare solutions, you can have younger looking, more radiant skin surprisingly quickly.
For instance, Skinception is known for its anti aging skin care solutions containing Argan Oil. While the technology is cutting-age, the oil use as a skin care product itself dates back to Phoenician times. Called "Liquid Gold", this oil will give you young, radiant skin.
Why not steal this ancient beauty secret and use it to your advantage? It will banish forever dull, dry skin and restore skin radiance and youthful glow. Skin firmness and elasticity will be greatly improved because this anti-age skincare solution works from inside to repair deeper skin layers and trap moisture in the skin.
You may have seen this product presented on TV shows such as America's next top model.
You may worry that your skin is already too oily to use this kind of skin care, or that oil in this Skinception product may clog your pores, but you don't have to: it's air-light and absorbs quickly and completely.
After using it for some time the only problem you will have is warding off compliments!

Time's Up! Time Management And Ageing.

We are fascinated by time. We borrow it, waste it, spend it, find it, take it, and sometimes even charge for it. You have found the time to read this, others can give us a hard time, we hurry to get to the shop before closing time arriving in the nick of time, and daylight saving time is the only form of time travel most of us will experience. We're even aware that our lives have a time limit (men approximately 600,000 hours and women 700,000). And the demands of everyday life can be so time-consuming that there's no time left to do the things that we'd really like to do. We can run out of time to enjoy time.
Time, of course, is a human construct: it didn't exist until we invented it. So there are many observations that continue to be made about this 'thing'.
Time, for example, does seem to speed up and slow down. Time taken travelling seems to go much slower than time spent when we arrive at the destination. Boring meetings and dull conversations seem to go on forever. And clock-watchers at work wish time would speed up and put an end to their misery. We're even prepared to pay significantly different prices for the same thing in different circumstances: timing is everything.
The debate about time speeding up as we age continues to get air-play. Annual events seem to come around more quickly as we age. Charles Schultz told us that, 'Once you're over the hill, you begin to pick up speed'. Gandhi observed that, '...as we grow older the clock runs faster and we slower'. And English novelist, playright, and broadcaster, J. B. Priestly, attributed time's acceleration with age because a year is a much smaller fraction of an older person's life than it is of a child's. Alas, in clock time, the years go by at exactly the same speed as always.
That often-quoted Anonymous said, 'We don't have all the time we need because we don't know how much time we have'. So, if his or her observation is correct, enjoying the moment seems like a good idea.
Given that time is part of everyday life for most of us, it comes as no surprise to find that one of the big demand areas is how to manage it (time, that is). As we've seen, what people mean by 'time' can differ significantly. The challenge, therefore, is to identify the specific type of time management required. This could include getting yourself (or someone else) organised, ending procrastination, setting priorities, using the telephone and social media effectively, handling drop-in visitors, and so on. Effective management of time can become the great enabler.
